Hongdae

Hongdae is the neighborhood built around an art school, and it shows. Hongik University is one of Korea's top fine arts and design schools, and the neighborhood that grew up around it became — first by accident, then on purpose — the center of Seoul's youth scene. Indie music venues. Used record stores. All-night cafés. Street performers on every Friday and Saturday night at the playground in front of the main exit. Tattoo studios. Hostels. Cheap food. And, increasingly over the last fifteen years, tourists. What hasn't changed: this is still where Korean university students go on weekends. The energy is real. So is the noise — Hongdae stays loud until 4am most weekends, and the main strip never fully sleeps. For mid-stay foreign guests, Hongdae is the natural choice for two specific groups. First, exchange students — Hongik, Yonsei, and Sogang are all within fifteen minutes, and the international student population here is enormous. Second, anyone whose Seoul priorities are music, going out, and a constantly-changing food scene. The clubs, the bars, the late-night Korean BBQ, the 4am ramen — they're all here. The downsides for a longer stay are predictable. Hongdae proper is loud, crowded, and getting more touristy every year. Apartments closer to the main strip will hear the street until 2-3am on weekends. Almost every quieter foreign resident eventually moves one neighborhood over — to Mangwon, Yeonnam (one stop north and quietly the new Hongdae), or Hapjeong. If you want the energy without the noise, look at those instead. If you came to Seoul specifically for the youth-culture scene, stay in Hongdae for at least the first month. There's nowhere else in Korea quite like it.
