Jongno

Jongno is where Seoul's history sits, mostly intact. Five royal palaces (Gyeongbokgung is the headliner), Bukchon Hanok Village with its slate-roofed traditional houses, Insadong's craft shops and tea houses, and Cheonggyecheon stream cutting through the middle of it all. The neighborhood balances museum-quiet streets with surprisingly modern pockets — Anguk station area has the boutique stores and the bars hidden behind unmarked doors that Seoul does better than anywhere. Stay here if your Seoul includes Joseon dynasty palaces, traditional tea ceremonies, and walking. A lot of walking. The hanok-lined streets aren't long but they reward slow movement. Subway-wise: Lines 1, 3, 5 all serve the area, plus Gyeongbokgung Station for direct palace access. Note: Jongno is geographically central but vibes more historical than urban. If you want late-night energy, you'll be commuting to Hongdae or Itaewon. If you want to actually feel Seoul's 600-year history while you're here, you're in the right place.
