Seongsu

Seongsu used to make shoes. Walk the side streets and you can still see it — old red-brick factories, the kind of buildings nobody built after the 1980s, garage doors and concrete loading bays. About a decade ago, those factories started becoming things. A leather workshop became a coffee roastery. A printing press became a concept store. A car repair garage became a wine bar. Now Seongsu is what foreigners ask about when they ask "where do creative people in Seoul live?" It's been called Seoul's Brooklyn, and like every comparison of that kind, it's both right and slightly lazy. The right part: small ateliers, design studios, indie fashion brands, third-wave cafés that take their espresso seriously. The lazy part: Seongsu has its own rhythm — wider streets, more horizontal than Brooklyn, closer to the Han River, and just as much factory left as there is studio. For mid-stay guests, Seongsu offers something Hannam doesn't: it feels like the neighborhood is changing while you're there. New things open every month. The hot café you saw on Instagram three weeks ago is now packed at 11am Tuesday. There's a strong remote-work scene here — coworking spaces, café laptops, weekday mornings full of people working alone but somehow together. Practical notes: Seongsu sits on Seoul Forest, the city's largest urban park, which is twenty minutes walk in any direction inside Seongsu. Hannam is a fifteen-minute drive. Gangnam is twenty minutes by subway. Konkuk University is one stop east — there's a steady undergrad and exchange-student energy on that side. The Han River cycling path runs the entire south edge of the neighborhood; bring or rent a bike.
