Hannam

Hannam is the neighborhood Seoul keeps to itself. Where Itaewon roars, Hannam whispers. Walk the same hill, ten minutes east, and the music drops out. Embassies. Foundation art galleries. The kind of cafés where someone is editing a screenplay alone in the back. Hannam started as the diplomatic district decades ago — Korean diplomats, foreign families, a quieter class of expat — and the slow rhythm of that history is still here. People walk slowly. They drink coffee for two hours. If you're staying in Hannam for a month or three, expect this: cafés that are also small architecture statements, restaurants run by chefs who trained somewhere abroad and came back with one specific idea, the Leeum Museum a ten-minute walk from anywhere, and the kind of small streets where the corner store knows your face by week two. It's not cheap. Hannam doesn't pretend to be. The trade-off is space, calm, and proximity — Itaewon's nightlife is fifteen minutes downhill, Gyeongnidan's restaurant strip is just over the hill, and Yongsan Station (with its KTX line to Busan) is twenty minutes by bus. If you're working remotely, recovering from somewhere busier, here for an exhibition or a fellowship, or just want a Seoul that doesn't perform — Hannam is the answer. The neighborhood quietly attracts foreign residents who've lived in Seoul before and chose to come back. There's a reason for that.
