Jamsil

Jamsil was farmland fifty years ago. The 1988 Olympics rebuilt it from scratch — wide grid streets, a stadium complex, planned green space, the kind of urbanism Korea did once and almost never again. The result is that Jamsil feels less dense than the rest of Seoul. There's air between the buildings. Sidewalks have trees. The blocks are big enough that you actually walk them. For mid-stay foreign visitors, Jamsil offers a few specific things that no other Seoul neighborhood combines as well. First, space — apartments here are larger than equivalent prices in Hannam or Hongdae, often by 30-50%. Second, parks — Olympic Park (over two square kilometers) is in walking distance, Seokchon Lake is on the west side, and the Han River park runs along the north. Third, medical — Asan Medical Center, one of the largest and most internationally recognized hospitals in Korea, is fifteen minutes by car. Severance and Samsung Medical are also under thirty minutes. This combination makes Jamsil a quiet favorite for foreign families with school-age kids, for medical visitors and their accompanying family members, and for anyone working in Gangnam who wants more space than Gangnam itself offers (Gangnam is fifteen to twenty minutes by subway from Jamsil). What Jamsil lacks: the dense café-and-bar scene of Hannam or Mangwon. There are great restaurants and a lot of them, but they're spread across a larger area. Lotte World Tower (Korea's tallest building) and the Lotte World mall are here for shopping; the Bangidong restaurant strip is the closest thing to a destination food street. For people who came to Seoul for nightlife or independent design culture, Jamsil isn't it. For people who came for stability and space, it's perfect.
