Sinchon

Sinchon is what Hongdae was twenty years ago, before the tourists arrived. Yonsei University, Ewha Womans University, and Sogang University are all within a ten-minute walk of each other, and Sinchon sits in the middle of the triangle they form. It's the original Seoul university district — the place where, before the Hongdae scene exploded in the 2000s, Korean students went out, ate cheap, and shaped the youth culture of the city. A lot of that energy moved to Hongdae and then to Yeonnam. What's left in Sinchon is, in a way, more grown-up: more bookstores, more older study cafés, more tutoring centers, fewer clubs. For mid-stay foreign guests, Sinchon is the strongest match in Seoul for one specific situation: you're enrolled at Yonsei, Ewha, or Sogang as an exchange student, language student, or summer program participant. You'll save thirty minutes a day in commute time. You'll be in walking distance of three campuses' libraries, cafés, and student events. The international student offices of all three universities can put you in touch with locals. Korean students will be your neighbors. For everyone else — Sinchon is decent but not exceptional. The main strip is busier than Hannam but not as scene-driven as Hongdae. Restaurants are good but not destination-level. The cafés are fine. The buildings are mostly mid-rise and from the 1990s. If you're not affiliated with one of the three universities, Mangwon, Yeonnam, or Hannam will probably feel better for the same money. The Yeonnam neighborhood, just north, has become noticeably more interesting in the last five years — quieter than Hongdae, more cafés and small restaurants than Sinchon. Worth knowing if you want the mood of Sinchon with more texture.
