Confirm the campus before searching#
This guide covers two universities in Dongjak-gu:
- Chung-Ang University Seoul Campus: 84 Heukseok-ro, beside the steep residential streets above Heukseok and close to Line 9.
- Soongsil University: 369 Sangdo-ro, directly served by Soongsil University Station on Line 7.
Chung-Ang also operates an Anseong campus. A listing described only as "near Chung-Ang University" is not enough; confirm that it serves the Seoul Campus in Heukseok.
The two Seoul campuses are relatively close on a map, but the hills and indirect cross-neighborhood routes matter. A room ideal for Chung-Ang can still create an inconvenient daily trip to Soongsil, and vice versa.
| Main destination | Start your search around | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Chung-Ang Seoul Campus | Heukseok, campus-side Sangdo, or Nodeul | Short campus access versus steep approaches |
| Soongsil University | Soongsil University Station or upper Sangdo | Direct campus routine versus fewer Line 9 options |
| Access to both | Sangdo Station and the central Sangdo corridor | Flexible bus access versus no equally short route to both |
| Campus plus central Seoul | Heukseok or Nodeul | Fast Line 9 connections versus a longer trip to Soongsil |
Apply for university housing first#
Chung-Ang University#
Chung-Ang's official exchange-student housing information explains that exchange students may be assigned to dormitory or apartment housing according to their exchange agreement and campus. Eligibility and assignment conditions can differ by program.
Confirm whether your offer is for the Seoul or Anseong campus, the exact residence, room occupancy, meal arrangement, fixed stay dates, health documents, payment deadline, and cancellation policy. Do not use an older exchange fact sheet as a current booking guarantee.
Soongsil University#
Soongsil's official Residence Hall introduction lists single, double, and quadruple room formats plus shared facilities. The room mix available to inbound students depends on the current semester notice and program allocation.
Ask the international office whether housing is guaranteed, whether bedding is supplied, what cooking facilities are available, and when the assignment result becomes binding. Keep an off-campus shortlist until the result and cancellation timeline are clear.
What the current furnished market costs#
On August 20, 2026, Locali had 28 active sample records categorized in Heukseok / Chung-Ang. Using the same guest-facing pricing calculation shown on Locali, the middle 50% of four-week totals ran from approximately $778 to $2,024, with a median around $1,591.
This is a planning reference, not a standard student-room quote. The lower end includes compact private rooms and shared formats, while larger furnished homes and higher-capacity units raise the upper end. It is also a stronger reference for Chung-Ang than for the streets immediately beside Soongsil.
Request an exact-date breakdown for every serious candidate:
| Cost line | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Stay price | Exact check-in and check-out dates |
| Management and utilities | Included, separately billed, or capped |
| Cleaning and bedding | One-time amount and what is supplied |
| Deposit | Amount, holder, deductions, and return timing |
| Platform or service fee | Included now or added later |
| Cancellation | Refund by date and treatment of every charge |
| International payment | Accepted method, currency, and processing cost |
Locali's Sample Stays are reference examples. Current availability, final price, foreign-guest conditions, host acceptance, and requested residence documents are checked before commitment.
Which area fits your campus#
Heukseok and the Chung-Ang front-gate side#
Heukseok places Chung-Ang students closest to the main campus environment, student restaurants, hospital, and Line 9. It is the clearest starting point when the Seoul Campus is your daily destination.
Choose it when: Walking access to Chung-Ang matters more than having a flat neighborhood or a large commercial district.
Check: The hill, staircase, and gate. A room near Heukseok Station can still require a demanding final climb.
Sangdo Station and the back-gate side#
Sangdo Station on Line 7 serves the eastern and upper side of the Chung-Ang area and can also support bus connections toward Soongsil. Some listings marketed for Chung-Ang are more practical from Sangdo than from Heukseok.
Choose it when: Your Chung-Ang building is on the Sangdo side or you want a compromise between the two universities.
Check: Do not rely on the station label alone. Walk the route to your building and compare the climb from both sides of campus.
Soongsil University Station#
This is the direct rail base for Soongsil. The station, campus entrances, student services, supermarkets, and residential streets form a practical daily area.
Choose it when: Soongsil is your main destination and you want the simplest campus routine.
Check: Exact campus gate, hill, and late-night route. A cheaper room deeper in Sangdo may add a meaningful walk.
Nodeul and the Han River side#
Nodeul provides a quieter residential setting and Line 9 access toward central Seoul and Gangnam. It can work for Chung-Ang with a bus or longer walk, but it is not a direct Soongsil base.
Choose it when: Line 9 and a calmer neighborhood matter more than walking to class.
Check: Bus frequency, the uphill campus approach, and the final route after late classes.
Noryangjin#
Noryangjin connects Lines 1 and 9 and offers a large low-cost food and exam-student district. It broadens transport options but creates a daily transfer or bus ride to either campus.
Choose it when: Budget, food options, and cross-city transport outweigh campus adjacency.
Check: Noise, building age, room size, and the door-to-campus trip at your real class time.

Explore the guidePick the housing format before the listing#
Goshiwon or residence room#
Often the lowest-cost private format, but room size, window quality, bathroom arrangement, and cooking rules vary sharply. Confirm whether the window opens outdoors and whether the quoted room is the exact unit.
Share house or private room#
A private bedroom with shared common areas can balance cost and community. Check bathroom ratio, cleaning responsibility, guest policy, quiet hours, security, and any gender-specific rule.
Furnished studio or one-bedroom#
This provides more privacy and normally includes a private bathroom, compact kitchen, washing machine, bed, and basic storage. Confirm the exact unit, bedding, cookware, desk, floor, elevator, sunlight, and management charges.
Entire multi-room home#
This can suit friends, couples, visiting faculty, or families. Confirm the guest limit, bedroom layout, extra-guest charges, stairs, and whether every occupant is accepted under the agreement.
A practical semester timeline#
Eight to ten weeks before arrival#
- Apply for the correct university and campus housing.
- Confirm your faculty building, semester dates, and orientation schedule.
- Decide which room formats and shared facilities are acceptable.
- Set a total budget including utilities, cleaning, deposit, and fees.
Four to eight weeks before arrival#
- Compare the direct campus area with two realistic backup stations.
- Request exact-date totals for suitable candidates.
- Check private cancellation terms against the dormitory and visa timeline.
- Ask what proof of residence the accommodation provider can issue.
Before paying#
- Confirm the exact unit, address, contracting party, and actual guest.
- Get all mandatory charges and cancellation terms in writing.
- Confirm foreign-guest acceptance and overseas payment options.
- Save the listing, agreement, messages, and payment record.
At check-in#
- Photograph existing damage and test essential appliances.
- Confirm heating, cooling, trash, recycling, access, and parcel instructions.
- Report discrepancies in writing promptly.
Residence Card and housing documents#
Students staying more than 90 days may need foreigner registration, still commonly called an ARC application, and proof of residence. The accepted evidence depends on status of stay and the accommodation arrangement. A reservation under another person's name does not automatically establish the student's residence.
Before booking, ask whether the provider can supply the housing-side documents requested for your case, such as an agreement identifying the actual guest, confirmation of accommodation, and supporting host identification or business registration when applicable.
Locali's paid verification workflow discloses its concierge role and the actual guest, then checks the requested housing documents before recommending payment. Locali cannot issue government documents or guarantee an immigration decision.
Confirm your case through your university and the Korea Immigration Service 1345 Immigration Contact Center.

Frequently asked questions#
Can I live near Chung-Ang and commute to Soongsil?#
Yes, especially from central Sangdo, but it is rarely the shortest routine for both. Test the bus and walking route to the exact campus building instead of comparing straight-line distance.
Is Heukseok Station enough to judge a Chung-Ang commute?#
No. The campus is on a hill, and different gates serve different buildings. Include the final climb and stairs in the comparison.
Should I wait for the dormitory result before searching privately?#
Build a shortlist while waiting. Avoid a non-refundable private commitment unless you understand both cancellation timelines, but do not wait until the last moment to learn the off-campus market.
Can an exchange student rent for one semester?#
Yes. Furnished studios, private rooms, share houses, residence rooms, and some entire homes accept semester-length stays. Minimum terms and discounts vary, so request an exact-date quote.
Can every rental support a Residence Card application?#
No. Ask what exact proof of residence the provider will issue and whether supporting host or business documents can be supplied when required. Confirm your visa-specific requirements before paying.
Start with the hill and gate you will repeat#
The best room is not simply the one with "Chung-Ang," "Soongsil," or "Sangdo" in its title. It is the one that fits your actual building, hill, total cost, sleep, paperwork, and daily routine for the whole semester.
