Confirm Seoul or Sejong before searching#
Hongik University operates campuses in different cities:
- Seoul Campus: 94 Wausan-ro, Mapo-gu, in the Hongdae and Sangsu area.
- Sejong Campus: Jochiwon, Sejong City, with a separate housing system.
This guide is for the Seoul Campus. A listing, dormitory page, or admission document labeled only "Hongik" may refer to either campus, so confirm the program and address first.
| Main priority | Start your search around | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Shortest campus walk | Sangsu, Wausan-ro, or the campus side of Hongdae | Direct access versus hills and nightlife spillover |
| Airport and city transport | Hongik University Station or Yeonnam | AREX convenience versus a longer walk to campus |
| Balanced transport and housing | Hapjeong | Lines 2 and 6 plus residential streets versus campus distance |
| Quieter student routine | Gwangheungchang or Sinchon edge | Calmer nights versus less direct Hongdae access |
| Lowest-noise backup | Mangwon or residential Yeonhui | More local atmosphere versus a daily bus or longer walk |
Apply for Hongik housing first#
Hongik's official Seoul Campus dormitory information describes multiple residence facilities associated with the Seoul Campus. The Office of International Affairs also maintains housing contacts and dormitory information for inbound students.
Confirm the current semester's eligibility, residence building, room occupancy, fixed stay dates, health-document requirements, bedding, meal plan, payment deadline, and cancellation rules. Do not assume that a room shown on the general dormitory page is reserved for your exchange or language program.
What the current furnished market costs#
On August 20, 2026, Locali had 39 active sample records categorized in Hongdae. Using the same guest-facing pricing calculation shown on Locali, the middle 50% of four-week totals ran from approximately $1,439 to $2,390, with a median around $2,116.
This wider category includes Hongdae, Hapjeong, Sangsu-adjacent, and Sinchon-side homes in several room formats. It is not a standard student-room price. Compact studios and shared formats can sit below the median, while entire homes, premium officetels, and high-capacity stays can be far above it.
Request an exact-date breakdown for every serious candidate:
| Cost line | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Stay price | Exact check-in and check-out dates |
| Management and utilities | Included, separately billed, or capped |
| Cleaning and bedding | One-time amount and what is supplied |
| Deposit | Amount, holder, deductions, and return timing |
| Platform or service fee | Included now or added later |
| Cancellation | Refund by date and treatment of every charge |
| International payment | Accepted method, currency, and processing cost |
Locali's Sample Stays are reference examples. Current availability, final price, foreign-guest conditions, host acceptance, and requested residence documents are checked before commitment.
Which area fits Hongik University#
Sangsu and Wausan-ro#
The streets around Sangsu and Wausan-ro serve the southern and campus-facing side of Hongik. They can provide a shorter walk than Hongik University Station and place student restaurants and cafes close by.
Choose it when: Campus access matters more than AREX or the largest commercial streets.
Check: Hills, bar noise, basement levels, and the route to your building. A short map distance may still involve a steep approach.
Hongik University Station#
The station connects Line 2, AREX, and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. It is excellent for airport access and cross-city travel, but the station is north of the main campus.
Choose it when: Transport and an active international neighborhood are central to your Seoul experience.
Check: Exit distance, weekend crowds, street noise, and the full walk to campus. "One minute from Hongik Station" does not mean one minute from Hongik University.
Yeonnam#
Yeonnam sits north and east of Hongik University Station around the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. It can feel more residential than the busiest club streets while retaining cafes and airport-rail access.
Choose it when: You want Hongdae access with a calmer residential atmosphere.
Check: The campus walk can be substantially longer than it appears from the neighborhood label. Test the route at your actual class time.
Hapjeong#
Hapjeong connects Lines 2 and 6 and provides supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, and residential streets toward the Han River. It can be quieter than central Hongdae while remaining close to campus by bus, train, or walk.
Choose it when: You want balanced transport, larger-room possibilities, or a less nightlife-heavy base.
Check: Exact address and hill. The northern and southern sides of Hapjeong produce different campus routes.
Gwangheungchang and Sinchon edge#
Gwangheungchang on Line 6 and the southern Sinchon edge can provide student-oriented housing near Sogang and within a practical bus or walking route of Hongik.
Choose them when: Price, sleep, or access to multiple west-Seoul universities matters more than living inside Hongdae.
Check: Transfer time and the last route home. Compare the same room format in Sangsu before deciding that the lower rent is better value.

Explore the guideChoose the housing format first#
Goshiwon or residence room#
Often the lowest-cost private format, but room size, window quality, bathroom type, and cooking rules vary sharply. Confirm whether the window opens outdoors and what laundry is included.
Share house or private room#
A private bedroom with shared common areas can balance cost and community. Check bathroom ratio, cleaning responsibility, guest policy, quiet hours, security, and any gender-specific rule.
Furnished studio or officetel#
This provides more privacy and generally includes a private bathroom, compact kitchen, washer, bed, and storage. Confirm the exact unit, bedding, cookware, desk, floor, elevator, sunlight, management fee, and nightclub or road noise.
Entire multi-room home#
This can work for friends, visiting faculty, or families and may offer better per-person value. Confirm the guest limit, bedroom layout, extra-guest charges, neighbor rules, and whether every occupant is accepted under the agreement.

- Apply for the Seoul Campus housing route for your student category.

- Request exact-date totals for suitable candidates.
- Check private cancellation terms against the dormitory and visa timeline.
- Ask what proof of residence the accommodation provider can issue.
Before paying#
- Confirm the exact unit, address, contracting party, and actual guest.
- Get all mandatory charges and cancellation terms in writing.
- Confirm foreign-guest acceptance and overseas payment options.
- Save the listing, agreement, messages, and payment record.
At check-in#
- Photograph existing damage and test essential appliances.
- Confirm heating, cooling, trash, recycling, access, and parcel instructions.
- Report discrepancies in writing promptly.
Residence Card and housing documents#
Students staying more than 90 days may need foreigner registration, still commonly called an ARC application, and proof of residence. The accepted evidence depends on status of stay and the accommodation arrangement.
Before booking, ask whether the provider can supply an agreement identifying the actual guest, confirmation of accommodation, and supporting host identification or business registration when applicable. A reservation under another person's name does not automatically establish the student's residence.
Locali's paid verification workflow discloses its concierge role and the actual guest, then checks the requested housing documents before recommending payment. Locali cannot issue government documents or guarantee an immigration decision.
Confirm your case through Hongik and the Korea Immigration Service 1345 Immigration Contact Center.

Frequently asked questions#
Is Hongik University Station next to the campus?#
Not exactly. The station is north of the main campus, and the final walk depends on the exit, street, hill, and faculty building. Sangsu can be closer for parts of campus.
Is Hongdae too noisy for a semester?#
Some blocks are, while nearby residential streets can be calm. Check the exact building orientation, road, club distance, and weekend conditions rather than judging the whole district by one label.
Is Hapjeong a good base for Hongik students?#
Yes, especially when Lines 2 and 6, larger-room options, or quieter streets matter. It usually trades a longer campus route for a more balanced residential setting.
Should I wait for the dormitory result before searching?#
Build a shortlist while waiting. Avoid a non-refundable private commitment unless you understand both cancellation timelines, but do not wait until the last moment to learn the market.
Can every rental support a Residence Card application?#
No. Ask what exact proof of residence the provider will issue and whether supporting host or business documents can be supplied when required.
Start with the block, not the Hongdae label#
The best Hongik room is not simply the one closest to the station name. It is the one that fits the Seoul Campus, your building, total cost, sleep, paperwork, and daily routine for the whole semester.
